Update on the Burn Situation

Hey, some kindly friends answered my pathetic call for comfort fic! ::hugs everybody::

[livejournal.com profile] dknightshade wrote a very tender Jean-Luc Picard/Beverly Crusher fic for me. And [livejournal.com profile] leni_ba wrote a fun and sexy Usagi/Mamoru ficlet into the comments! Yay! :D

Special thanks also to [livejournal.com profile] kim_cc and [livejournal.com profile] vespurrs for the recommendations, and [livejournal.com profile] redwolfoz for promising me more Declán. (I'll hold you to that, Wolf! ::evil grin::)

In related news, the burn stopped stinging around 2am last night, allowing me to go to bed and actually get some sleep. It's still a deep red welt (about four inches long, one inch wide), but is no longer bothering me.

Thanks again, guys! :)

This week's [livejournal.com profile] 15minuteficlets was late, so I'm still thinking.

On the plus side, the loom is warped up and I've woven half a metre of scarf with a weft of hand spun green-blue silk plyed with black alpaca.

Alpaca? As in those little llamas? Nifty! :P

Do you sell your pieces, or do you just weave as a hobby?

Three scarves will go on this warp. The second will be done in teal qiviut plyed with a blend of blue-green merino and silk, the third done in the same blue-green merino and silk plyed with the black alpaca again.

I like Alpacas. They have good fibre to work with.

Sold a few pieces, but mostly do it as a hobby. The first scarf is being done because my sister was pestering me.

One of the scarves I'm keeping from a previous session on the loom won a second prize at the Hawkesbury Show. It's the darker tweedy looking one, the other one went to Tonka's breeder.

Cooooool. Prettttty. ::stares::

So. Do you take commissions, and how much do you charge? :P

Commissions are no worries. Price depends on what they're made from (the qiviut in the second scarf was C$30/25gm, most fibre, including silk, is much cheaper) and mood at the time, but I happily work on trade. What are you interested in?

[identity profile] moonbeamsfanfic.livejournal.com 2004-06-08 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure exactly. :|

For one thing, I'm not familiar with the type of material you've mentioned. (Well, I am with silk, of course. But not qiviut, for example.) So I don't know what each different fibre you work with would feel like. Heck, even with silk the possible textures may vary!

I've got a small all-natural silk scarf dyed with pigments I cooked up myself in Chem class one time. As it is unrefined silk, which it had to be to maximize absorption of the chemical dyes we made, it is incredibly rough to the touch. It is not suitable for practical use, but I keep it because I'm just so darn proud of myself for making it! :)

I'd be after something similar from you, if you were to make it for me. Nothing to wear, just something hand-made I could treasure. It doesn't have to be big or complicated, although I'd like it if it were in pretty colours. You made a scarf in purple, right? Could you do something in greens or blues?

As for payment, what would you be looking for in trade? I certainly don't have any skill comparable to this!

Qiviut is the wooly undercoat from Musk Oxen. Very light, very warm and very expensive. I have none at the moment and it was a bitch to spin.

I have plenty of silk here. I love the stuff. It dyes the most amazing colours, is easy to spin, feels fantastic and, most importantly, is shiny.

I've got a bag of Samoyed fuzz here if you'd like a dog scarf.

I use commercial yarns as a warp, usually cotton and cottolin (cotton/linen blend) for strength. The wefts are handspun. I usually ply brightly dyed silk with black alpaca to set off the dye colours. I like to space dye silk, multi-colours in the one dye job, so you get a multi-coloured yarn. Fun!

The company logo and business cards were designed in exchange for two purple scarves. The weft of one was marine blue silk plyed with black alpaca, but when it was woven on a purple warp it looked a nice deep purple.

How about you wait and see how their three scarves turn out. The warp is mostly jade green with blue and black stripes. Should give you an idea of different wefts on the same warp. I'll post photos when they're off the loom.

Stuff I'm after: Always the Amazon wish list and I'm always after interesting yarns and fibres (got a friend with a big hairy dog that sheds?). Hemp Traders have some hemp/wool yarn I like the look of, cheap stuff, but shipping is more than the price of the product. Aurora Silk has some hemp fibre that looks good, no idea on international shipping though.

Yes, I'll wait to see the photos of your current labours. There's no hurry after all... I'm not going anywhere. ;)

Don't know about the logistics of hemp fibres -- I'll have to do some research if I'm serious about this venture -- but I do have a friend with a sheepdog. Not sure whether he's been shaved for the summer yet already, though.

Pity you aren't into Dr Who, dear - otherwise I'd have a whole boatload of sappy shippy fics to send your way...ah well. :)

[identity profile] moonbeamsfanfic.livejournal.com 2004-06-08 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that I don't like Doctor Who, because I do. It's just that I don't know it well enough, I get easily confused. I can't keep track! :( 20 years and they're still coming up with new ideas?! Impressive, but... I'm LOST! ::whines::

Errm... 40 years, actually. ;)
But, yes, Dr Who does have a very long and complex history...I might be able to help some if you have questions - what exactly is confusing you, dear?

The ABC are screening Doctor Who from the beginning, as I've only seen a handful of episodes with the later Doctors, it's been great getting to see the earlier ones.

Unfortunately, they are NOT airing in Canada. At all. The bastards.

Enjoy Deliquescence. A metre of scarf woven. Woohoo!
