Plot bunnies bouncing...

I rented the movie "Masterminds" from the video store for the presence of Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard of ST:TNG) as the Bag Guy, but found myself mightily intrigued by the teenaged protagonist, Oswald Paxton. Ozzie, played by Vincent Kartheiser, is an irreverant genius punk who uses his creativity and brilliance to save his little sister from the Bad Guys With Guns (BGWG).

The plot of the movie is fairly standard. BGWG, led by Patrick Stewart's character Rafe Bentley, take over a school filled with the richest kids in America, holding the kids for 650 million dollars in ransom money. But Ozzie, who as punishment for getting caught hacking into a not-yet-released videogame's database has to drop his step-sister off at class, is trapped within the school during the take-over. Smart boy that he is, he heads for the safezones of airducts, basements, and catwalks to recon the situation. While the BGWG are making their demands to the cops out front, young Ozzie is setting traps, overheating the boiler, triggering the indoor sprinkler system, pouring nitric acid on floors, even rigging the pool to explode. Generally causing a great deal of mayhem, driving the BGWG nuts, and managing to pick a few of them off while doing it. All while cracking wise, smart-ass one-liners and other bitchy peanut-gallery commentary.

Now does that sound familiar to any one? Cuz it sure as hell did to me. :)

Hit me with the crossover bunny, baby!

Ozzie Paxton, Lucas Wolenczak. Two gorgeous little smart-mouthed punk-ass boy geniuses. Set it pre-seaQuest, give 'em some corrupt UEO officials as Enemies, and turn 'em loose with just themselves and their own talents for help. Nothing to rely on but their own brains and each other, up against a big bad world that wants them dead -- or worse.

I could even see making this one slash. Not something I thought I would ever do in seaQuest fandom, since I'm not generally into chanslash, but for these boys I'd make the exception. And if it is set pre-series, then this little adventure could even conceivably serve as the reason behind Lucas's posting to the seaQuest in the first place.

Hey... it works with canon! Cool!

I haven't seen Masterminds (but now I suppose I will have to), but that does sound like a feasable crossover. :) Anything involving my boy Lucas makes me pretty happy.

Sis wasn't your SeaQuest phase like 8 years ago or something? And Connor! What are you thinking?!

Connor? Angel's punk-ass kid? He's played by the same actor?!

Mea culpa, had no idea. C'mon, sis, you know I don't watch Angel. Like I'm gonna recognize a character I've barely heard about from a role he did six years ago. Puh-leaze. Connor's supposed to be a teenager in the TV show, Ozzie was still in high school in the movie. However old Kartheiser really is, if he looks young now, he looked downright babyish then.

And what's wrong with seaQuest? Like you wouldn't dive right into Earth 2 if you found some. Hypocrit...

Masterminds? SeaQuest?

Seen Masterminds many moons ago. So forgettable I didn't even twig to the good guy being played by Vincent, but then I found his portrayal of Connor in Angel equally forgettable, not to mention nauseating.

As for SeaQuest, one of the cable channels has picked it up recently. It really doesn't stand up to repeated viewing, but neither do any of the Star Trek franchise. If it wasn't for Ted Raimi I wouldn't even bother stopping my channel surfing habits to perve. At least the DeLuise boys went on to better things on the other side of the camera with Stargate SG-1.

Aye, Wolf, you're right. Neither the movie nor the TV show were great masterpieces of the entertainment industry. But then, for me, neither has to be. "Masterminds" was aimed at a younger audience, and frankly I thought it was fun. As for seaQuest? Except for the first season, even I can admit it sucked. But the idea is a good one, and much fun to play with. seaQuest is one of those shows where the fandom is better than the series ever was. When seaQuest went off the air years ago I completely forgot about it. It's only been in the past few months I've bothered looking up the fandom. And like many of my old favorites (including Knight Rider, Kung Fu: TLC, and Forever Knight), the fic has better characterizations and plots than the producers ever came up with. Heck, I consider one fan's (ie: Gryph) AU of KR more canonical than the series itself! Her AU is by far way better written -- and she's not even a native English speaker!

And Ted Raimi ain't that good of an actor to hold my attention -- even he couldn't keep me in Xena. We'll not even talk about Stargate: SG-1. That's another one of those shows with enormous potential which was allowed to deterioriate into crap. It's too maudlin to contemplate.

Ted Raimi falls into the Bruce Campbell school of hammy acting. But if you want to see hammy check out some of Sam Raimi's cameos. Very amusing.

Bruce actually can act, he just gets few opportunities to do so. Yet to find out if the same is true of Ted.
