moonbeamsfanfic: (Metallicar - Impala from Supernatural)
I totally just wrote this today because [livejournal.com profile] shade_shifter wanted it dared me to. Hi, Shifty! ::waves:: Look what I did! Don't worry if you don't get all the TF nuances... neither does Dean. XP

ETA: Now with bonus cracky comment-fic, because people keep daring me to! ACK! *eg*

moonbeamsfanfic: (Yay!)
Yay, it's another installment of the Jack-fic crossovers! Ostensibly written for the [livejournal.com profile] 10_inspirations challenge, although it's taking me way too long to get through. Seven more to go! ;P

Yay, finally... it's Jack-fic the Second! Supposedly written for the [livejournal.com profile] 10_inspirations challenge, although I obviously suck at being inspired since it took a convo with [livejournal.com profile] lyl_devil in a comment-thread of [livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills's to get me to finish it. But hey, look, and it only took me nine months to write! Woot, I'm on a roll!

moonbeamsfanfic: (The Plot Bunny Factory)
Once a year, every year, a special time must come. A time to celebrate, to rejoice in our good fortune, and of course, to give presents. Today is that time... for it is the inimitable [livejournal.com profile] redwolfoz's birthday. And as her good, dear, and oh-so-lovable friend, I've hauled out my muse and done my best to write her a fic worthy as a gift.

Or, well, that was the intention anyway. I seem to have had a slight problem with her prompt. ::blushes:: Heh.

In line with the requested "vegetation" theme, this supposedly simple little fic idea I had went and grew a plot. A plot! Ficlet's aren't supposed to have plots, 'specially not the b-day prezzie kind! But alas, this one does...

2000 words later, and the real story is only just beginning... )

So now, if my Wolf does not object, I'll take a page out of her book and continue the tale in a series of short interconnected ficlets. If she so desires...

::bows:: By your leave, Red Wolf, I wish you a bountiful and joyous, Happy Birthday!

So my mum's in town this week. It's about an 8 hour drive from where she lives to here, 800km or 600mi, whatever floats your boat. Basically a full day on the road, and most definitely a full tank of gas (or two, depending on the size of the vehicle) to drive it. Consequently, when my mum and I decided to go out for lunch today, we had to fill up her car first before we could. So we stopped at Esso and my mum got out to pump the petrol... ten seconds later she's pounding on my window shreaking about what she found in the gas tank: A huge mama orb spider! ::boggles:: A spider! In a gas tank! With babies! WTF?!

Obviously, given the nest full of baby spider eggs, mama orb had been there for at least a day or two. Which means she crawled in at Fort Mac, and stayed put for the entire 800km drive to Calgary. Now, maybe it's just me, but I think choosing to lay your eggs next to something as toxic as a gasoline tank is pretty much one of the stupidest things a spider could do. Those babies didn't stand much chance for survival where they were, so I didn't feel too guilty scraping the nest out with a piece of paper towel. Mama got safely relocated to a grove of flowers, though. Hopefully she'll lay new eggs in that much more welcoming environment.

Still, I gotta ask, why the gas tank? What goes through a spider's mind that makes her think that's a good place to nest? Seriously!

***

Also, I have no idea how I never knew about this before, but there's an awesomely long early season Stargate: SG-1/MacGyver crossover over at Chevron Two called "Thicker Than Water" by Margaret Martin. I'm only half-way through chapter four so I can't tell how it's gonna end, but so far it's very interesting, well-written, and excellently in-character. A good find. Yay for me! :D

***

EDIT: Apparently, today is the day for spiders. I just had a jumping spider hop onto my keyboard. Cute little guy, but so not the place for him to be. Off to the backyard he goes... ::le sigh::
moonbeamsfanfic: (Beta of Death)
God! Earlier this afternoon, I finished beta-reading a 46,000 word novel for [livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills that I've been working on for the past week. It was long, it was plotty, it had scorchingly hot sex scenes, and it made me squee like a giddy fiend in outrageously happy joy almost all the way through.

Ten minutes ago, I read [livejournal.com profile] shade_shifter's new House fic. It isn't even two pages long, has no plot, and the sex is only barely mentioned. But it is so powerfully, intensely, incredibly well written that it swept through me with the terrifying wrath of a flash flood and left me a beaten, shattered carcass by the side of my lacerated, blood-drained heart.

These two fics -- neither of which is yet posted -- could not be more opposite. One carried me to the ultimate heights of pleasure, and the other smashed me down on the lowest of emotional rocks. Yet, each of them is a pinacle of writing ability that left me breathless and aching for more, more, more!

God! I am the LUCKIEST beta-reader on the planet!

......

Of course, if someone wanted to rec me some nice, safe, sweetly comforting little fics right now to soothe my aching heart... I wouldn't object in the least. ;)

EDIT: Shift's angsty House/Wilson fic, The Way It Goes is now posted!

Man, today? Am I ever! I am/will be beta-ing for FOUR people today! 4! Holy crap!

So you see? I'm totally the Beta-Reader of Death today. Hence the pathetic attempt at iconage. :D

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] reoune? I know I promised you an email, but would mind waiting until tomorrow? I'm on a roll right now and don't want to throw myself off track. Thanks!

So grab 'em -- grab 'em all! Yoink a snippet, a sentence, a drabble, a flopsy, a fragment, or a ficlet from them. Whatever you wanna call it -- make with the yoinking!

Then POST it! Ha! *eg*

That'll teach that WIP who's boss!! Mwuahahaha!!!

Sent this scribble to [livejournal.com profile] redwolfoz via email last night and she liked it enough to want to keep it. It's already posted on her website, so I figured might as well post it on LJ too.

Set in Red Wolf's original Wolf&Declán!verse, and occuring sometime in the London!verse, here's what Spike and Dawn's co-workers have been up to on their own time...

Summary: Declán is less than happy to learn there's a new man in Rachel's life.

I sat down tonight to work on the next story of my "Umbra" series, a crossover not only of two TV shows but of two widely popular Alternate Universes as well. The first story in the series, "Predators and Prey" introduces the relationship between sharpshooter Vin Tanner (from the modern-day ATF AU of The Magnificent Seven) and mysterious Nick MacKenzie (from Gryph's fantastic "Fire & Ice" AU of Knight Rider). Instead of what I was hoping for though, I wound up writing this...

It does NOT fit into to my "Umbra" series at all, but is at least set in the same basic !verse, after "Predators and Prey". But it gets weirder than that, too, because it also draws on a couple of other unexpected sources. One, the hit cult movie Hackers (starring Angelina Jolie). And two, the boy genius from SeaQuest. Why? ::shrugs:: Why not? Just go with it. ;)

For those KR fans who might read this, sorry that this is mostly M7-focused. Nick and Karr were there in spirit though. :)

This is not part of the "Life at the Lair" series, and I realise I'm violating my own words by having written it when I said I wouldn't be doing any writing for a while. But this is special. This is a heartfelt Thank You gift for [livejournal.com profile] redwolfoz.

Red Wolf has been exceptionally kind and patient with me over the last few days -- though she's always been nothing but a solid, steadfast friend -- during the designing of several beautiful graphics for the new Secret Lair website. In honour of her incredibly hard work, I took time away from beta-reading Nevermore's fic to write something I hope she'll enjoy. (And Norm, if by some small chance you're reading this... Sorry! ;P)

So thank you, Wolf. I had a chat with Spike and Wolverine, and this is what they suggested. I hope you like it, and don't mind me delving briefly into the world of Wolf & Declán. :)

Anybody else reading this, be advised that it is not my usual light and fluffy humour.

Oh, and unless my understanding of timezones is completely off...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WOLF!

Saw something on the Discovery Channel that, combined with something I'd read earlier today, sparked an idea for a Stargate fic. I'm not entrely sure of all the details as yet, but it'll be a crossover with Highlander at least, and maybe Forever Knight as well. (Not too sure about the last one, may just make subtle inferences to it. I like stories with hidden nods to other fandoms.) It is, however, mainly a Stargate fic -- set sometime pre-"Meridian".

Oh, and may become slashy at a later date, although for now I'm working on a GEN principle. There's not much more here than the initial set-up, and not even the full thing of that. I just wanted to get the factual information I'd learned down first, and I'll build the story from there.

Daniel makes Jack's eyes glaze over, and Jack makes dinner... )

EDIT: I've figured out where I want this sucker to go now, and it's staying GEN. Still crossing over with Highlander, but only Methos -- it's mainly a Stargate fic. And while Jack will be taking a central role, it will not become another "Jack and Methos Show". Daniel and the rest of SG-1 will get plenty of showing. This I promise you. ::pinky swears::
moonbeamsfanfic: (The Plot Bunny Factory)
I rented the movie "Masterminds" from the video store for the presence of Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard of ST:TNG) as the Bag Guy, but found myself mightily intrigued by the teenaged protagonist, Oswald Paxton. Ozzie, played by Vincent Kartheiser, is an irreverant genius punk who uses his creativity and brilliance to save his little sister from the Bad Guys With Guns (BGWG).

The plot of the movie is fairly standard. BGWG, led by Patrick Stewart's character Rafe Bentley, take over a school filled with the richest kids in America, holding the kids for 650 million dollars in ransom money. But Ozzie, who as punishment for getting caught hacking into a not-yet-released videogame's database has to drop his step-sister off at class, is trapped within the school during the take-over. Smart boy that he is, he heads for the safezones of airducts, basements, and catwalks to recon the situation. While the BGWG are making their demands to the cops out front, young Ozzie is setting traps, overheating the boiler, triggering the indoor sprinkler system, pouring nitric acid on floors, even rigging the pool to explode. Generally causing a great deal of mayhem, driving the BGWG nuts, and managing to pick a few of them off while doing it. All while cracking wise, smart-ass one-liners and other bitchy peanut-gallery commentary.

Now does that sound familiar to any one? Cuz it sure as hell did to me. :)

Hit me with the crossover bunny, baby!

Ozzie Paxton, Lucas Wolenczak. Two gorgeous little smart-mouthed punk-ass boy geniuses. Set it pre-seaQuest, give 'em some corrupt UEO officials as Enemies, and turn 'em loose with just themselves and their own talents for help. Nothing to rely on but their own brains and each other, up against a big bad world that wants them dead -- or worse.

I could even see making this one slash. Not something I thought I would ever do in seaQuest fandom, since I'm not generally into chanslash, but for these boys I'd make the exception. And if it is set pre-series, then this little adventure could even conceivably serve as the reason behind Lucas's posting to the seaQuest in the first place.

Hey... it works with canon! Cool!
